Welcome to Year 1

STEM Projects Take Off!

The Year One and Two classes have joined forces, after their excursion to Herdsman Wildlife centre last week, to begin their STEM projects around the focus of sustainability in our local area.  Some great ideas are developing, from designing an ‘infomercial’ to creating remote control bins.  We can’t wait to share our updates with you as they progress!  The children are collaborating in small groups for the design and create stage.

During Music lessons the Year 1s have been discovering how music can be added to their favourite poems. With each additional verse another sound is added so the children have been investigating sound sources to accompany each verse of the Hairy Scary Castle poem.

What a fantastic job the Year Ones did presenting ‘Room on the Broom’, by Julia Donaldson, last week! Great characters, fantastic acting and very impressive delivery of lines. The rhythm of the book was brought to life.

During the month of May, the Year 3 students collected food donations to stock the St Vincent De Paul Food Pantry. Volunteer, Mrs Meg Roche met the students at the pantry and talked about where the food is donated and how the students could help further. The Year 1 class will take over this responsibility for the month of June so the Year 3 students wrote letters to them explaining what to do. Thanks to all the families for the donations.

The Year 1 and 2 Incursion on ‘lunch box’ recycling and reduction of waste proved to be quite a powerful eye opener to the children on just how much excessive packaging there is in our daily food intake.

Aiming to improve our sustainability footprint the Year 1 and 2 classes are throwing out a challenge to the St John’s School Community to let go plastic wraps and packaging traps to reduce waste! Shall we give it a go?

One of the persuasive arguments put forward by the presenter was in relation to how long packaging takes to break down and another was the importance of choosing foods that are sustainable, i.e., things that can go into a compost bin.

Years 1-6 are now collecting their crunch and sip scraps so that the Year 6 Environment Team can place them into our compost tumbler.

Scitech

The Year One class visited SCITECH  to explore simple machines. They discovered that the forces of air, wind, light, sound and human movement can produce amazing effects.

We are looking forward to discussing our findings together as a group and persuading other classes that they should visit Scitech!
