Welcome to Year 2

REmida Incursion – ‘Make It Move’

Year 2 had great fun during their Make it Move Incursion today. The STEM undertaking had a major focus on engineering skills involving trial and error, cause and effect and creativity. The Science topic of Movement was a driving force. Children were encouraged to consider how to make various elements their creation, i.e., a spider, move. They were also exploring differing types of movement.

STEM Projects Take Off!

The Year One and Two classes have joined forces, after their excursion to Herdsman Wildlife centre last week, to begin their STEM projects around the focus of sustainability in our local area.  Some great ideas are developing, from designing an ‘infomercial’ to creating remote control bins.  We can’t wait to share our updates with you as they progress!  The children are collaborating in small groups for the design and create stage.

Years One and Two visited Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre last week to encourage their interest and enhance their learning about insects, creatures and birds. This acquired knowledge will be used to inspire an exciting STEM project around our focus of Sustainability.

Fidget Spinners

Year 2 planned and designed the making of a fidget spinner in STEM using recycled materials. The focus for this project is ‘movement’ in science and ‘trial and error’ for engineering.

100th Day of School

YAY! We reached 100 days of school today! In Pre Primary we have counted each day of school every morning. Finally, we made it to 100! We celebrated with some cooking and craft, with the help of the Year 2 class. It has been a fun experience counting each day and learning numbers at the same time. Thank you, Year 2, for your amazing help today.

Artistic Springs Flowers

During their Art lessons Year 2 had to tap into their imagination and create a pot of blooms that would sit on a table. Particular attention was paid to creating a pattern on the pot and tablecloth.  They looked at exploring variety in the flowers and considering the use of space.

Our Art Teacher was very impressed with the results and declared, “I would love to have these pots decorating my own house!  They would certainly brighten up my day!”

NUDE FOOD – GOOD MOOD

The Year 1 and 2 Incursion on ‘lunch box’ recycling and reduction of waste proved to be quite a powerful eye opener to the children on just how much excessive packaging there is in our daily food intake.

Aiming to improve our sustainability footprint the Year 1 and 2 classes are throwing out a challenge to the St John’s School Community to let go plastic wraps and packaging traps to reduce waste! Shall we give it a go?

One of the persuasive arguments put forward by the presenter was in relation to how long packaging takes to break down and another was the importance of choosing foods that are sustainable, i.e., things that can go into a compost bin.

Years 1-6 are now collecting their crunch and sip scraps so that the Year 6 Environment Team can place them into our compost tumbler.

Rhythm tapping
