Hillary’s Jetty Excursion

We went to Hillarys Jetty to participate in a fishing clinic run by RecFishWest. Kim and Kevin, our instructors, talked to us about safety while fishing, humane treatment of the fish we catch and fish conservation. They also gave us a quick lesson on how to cast out. We spent the next hour trying our luck at seeing what we could reel in. There were many blowfish caught and we think we fed them well that morning, but there were also a few decent catches. Mason caught a 24cm whiting! We all agreed it was a great (although stinky!) morning and we learnt a lot about sustainability and safety while fishing. We’re looking forward to practising our new skills over the summer holidays!

Library Book Series

During Library our Year Four class has been encouraged to read a book series. The children’s enthusiasm showed no bounds when asked to explain why they enjoyed their chosen book, as these quotes show:
“In ‘The 52 Story Treehouse’ he trains ninja snails and the snails don’t listen. It’s very funny”
“I like the ‘Harry Potter’ series because the adventures are interesting.  For example, when Harry went to save his Uncle from Voldermort.”
“’Nevermoor’ by Jessica Townsend is my favourite book because it is magical and mysterious, with lots of twists and turns.”
“I like ‘Trails of Apollo’ because it is exciting and there are lots of cliff-hangers and adventures.”

This term in Year 4, we have focused on Food and Fibre Production in our Technology and Design lessons.  As a class, we learnt about the natural fibre of wool and the process of its production in Australia.  We then discussed how we could use wool to produce our own product and decided on making Friendship Bracelets.  After watching a few instruction videos, we found one that we like and have been busy making them all term so we can sell at our Mission Stall in St John’s week to raise money for the Missions.

Woolworths Discovery Excursion

On Tuesday 14th August, the Year 4 class went to Woolworths Karrinyup for a Food Discovery Tour.  As part of their Technology curriculum, they have been looking at food and fibre production, and how items get from “paddock to plate”.  The students visited the bakery, the cool room, the loading dock and the very cold freezer.  To finish up, they completed an activity sorting fruit and vegetables into categories, depending on how they are grown … either underground, on a bush, on a tree or vine.  A fun afternoon was had by all!

Our Year 4s recently went on their First Holy Communion Retreat to Ern Halliday. It was a chance for the children to focus at a deeper level of knowledge about the Eucharist and how to be connected to God. They are busily preparing for their First Holy Communion this weekend.

Fun With Spheros in STEM

In Technology, the Year 3 and 4 classes have been learning how to direct a Sphero robot to follow a path. They have experimented with using a joystick and block coding to send it exactly where it needed to go.  Careful planning and measuring of their track ensured the activity was rich in mathematical and technological understanding.

Civics and Citizenship

As part of the Civics and Citizenship program, Year 4s have been learning about local and state governments.

To wrap up the program the students experienced public transport, caching the bus (state government) to Scarborough Library (local government).

The very helpful Librarian informed the students of the library’s resources. In addition to lending books, magazines, DVDs and e-books the library offers weekly activities including Lego afternoons, school holiday events, books clubs and a comprehensive local history collection.

The students were able to choose and borrow books, before walking down the hill back to school.

Here are our Year 4 students stocking the St Vincent de Paul Society pantry in the Parish Centre with Meg Roche (Coordinator) with food goods they collected during the week. Grateful thanks to the students and their families for supplying the goods.
