Dear Parents and Carers
Last week our Year 6 children attended Ern Halliday Recreation Centre for their Camp and threw themselves with enthusiasm and vigour into all the challenges and collaborative team building tasks provided. Time after time instructors from the Centre remarked to Mr Goldie, Mrs Bottega and I how well mannered our children were and how, because of their excellent listening skills, they were able to be taken through more turns in the activities than most groups that come to them throughout the year. It was high praise and certainly indicative of these particular students and, in general, the students at St John’s. So, accolades to all our parents and teachers who consistently expect the very best of manners from our children. Well done, Year 6 students, on your excellent behaviour and the support and consideration you constantly displayed to your classmates when they found something scary or challenging (i.e., Big Swing).
Our Year 3 and 5 students commenced the NAPLAN testing period this morning with Writing. The Reading test will be held tomorrow for Year 3 and the Year 5 class will do the Reading test first thing, followed by a recess break, then take the Language Conventions test. Year 3 will do the Language Conventions test early on Thursday morning and the Numeracy test on Friday morning. Our Year 5 children will do their Numeracy test on the Thursday.

Year 6 Camp
Year 6 had their school camp at Ern Halliday Recreation Centre last week. We enjoyed some beautiful weather and had lots of fun doing some very challenging experiences. Tasks included archery, crate climb , flyng fox, Big Swing and other team building games on the beach and in the camp. Night activities included a quiz and a very entertaining entertainment night. We also toasted marshmallows around the fire!
Everyone had a fantastic time. Thanks to Mrs Bottega and Mrs Bizzaca for helping out and being part of everything.
The LifeLink organisation was established by the Archdiocese of Perth in 1994 to provide for the ongoing financial and promotional support of agencies established or assisted by the Church.
LifeLink’s agencies deliver professional services & caring support to thousands of people in need throughout Western Australia each year.
The work of LifeLink is indeed a positive demonstration of Faith in Action.
LifeLink Day 2019 will officially be launched on Wednesday 5 June 2019 during WA Week, with four year six students and Mrs Bizzaca and Mr Alonzo attending the launch.
It is appropriate that during this week of celebrating what is great about our State, that we focus on and remember people in need within the community – our ‘brothers and sisters’ right here ‘at home’ in WA.
LifeLink Day provides a wonderful opportunity for students attending Catholic schools within the Archdiocese of Perth, to join together to show their collective support for the many Church social service agencies – agencies which on behalf of us all, reach out to provide practical care and direct assistance to thousands of people in need within the community each year.
We don’t ask why people are in need; we don’t ask them to explain them to explain how; we don’t judge them nor do we condemn them.
We simply say, “Here’s someone in need; here’s someone who is finding life a real struggle at the moment; here’s someone who has the same hopes and dreams as we do, but whose life hasn’t worked out the way they would have hoped – and we ask ‘How can I help’.
For Lifelink Day 2019, our Archbishop, the Most Rev Timothy Costelloe is asking Archdiocesan primary schools to enthusiastically participate in and support a new and exciting project this year called ‘LifeLink’s Big Book of Love and Hope.’
Each child will be asked to make a gold coin donation and to take part in designing a page within our own St John’s Big Book of Love and Hope. Our book will be filled with messages of support for people in need, photos or information on the work of our LifeLink agencies.
It will be a powerful reminder that when we work together, as one Catholic family, to reach out to our brothers and sisters in need…. we are expressing our Faith and truly walking in the footsteps of the Good Shepherd.
