All current policies below this point are considered under review in 2021 and will be updated by the end of the year. Should there be conflicting information between the policy information below and the policy information above, the Catholic Education Western Australia Limited Policy is to be followed.
Code of Conduct
The mandated points within the Code of Conduct were compiled by a team within the Catholic Education Office of WA. The following aspects regarding the creation of a ‘good’ policy are taken directly from this source. The Leadership Team of St John’s Primary School sought input from all staff, some student representatives from Year 6, 5 and 4 and parents on the School Board and P&F Executive.

Aboriginal Education Policy
This policy acknowledges that Aboriginal people are the original inhabitants of Australia. Catholic education, and therefore St John’s is committed to maximising the learning opportunities for Aboriginal people and the richness and diversity which exists within the Aboriginal nations of Australia.

Administration and Storage of Medication Policy
St John’s Primary School recognises that in terms of the administration of medication:
- some students require long term medication for control of chronic medical conditions;
- some students need short term medication for management of acute illness or infection;
- some students require occasional analgesia, decongestants or antihistamine;
- students may require medication during excursions or camping trips; (Appendices 1&2)
- medications must be stored appropriately, as per the pharmacist’s recommendations;
- when medication is given, written records of this administration of medication must be kept. (Appendices 3)

Anaphylaxis Management Policy
The key to prevention of anaphylaxis in schools is knowledge of the student who has been diagnosed as at risk, awareness of allergens, and prevention of exposure to those allergens. Partnerships between schools and parents/guardians are important in helping the student avoid exposure.

Correct recording of student attendance is a legal requirement for teachers in schools in Western Australia.

Selection of Appropriate Texts Policy
St John’s, as a Catholic school, aims to help students to integrate culture, faith and life. Culture is valued and St John’s School promotes discussion and critical thought. The values and attitudes at St John’s are founded upon the teaching of Jesus Christ. Therefore, the selection of texts is a rigorous and careful process.

Student Enrolment Policy
St John’s Primary School, Scarborough, established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1936 is a coeducational Catholic Primary School that follows the guidelines and policies set down by the Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia. St John’s is a single stream school enrolling boys and girls from 3 Year Old Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6.

ICT Students Policy
ICT provides significant educational value but can pose a risk of exposur4e in inappropriate and offensive material and personal safety, hence the policy. The availability of digital resources provides the opportunity of schools to help students develop their full potential.

Privacy
As with all decisions concerning children, the best interests of the student are a primary and overriding consideration in the management of information. A student’s right to safety prevails above all other considerations, including theirs and others’ right to privacy.
